National Youth Safety Spokesman
The National Youth Safety Spokesman will serve as a national public speaker with a powerful farm safety message available to FS4JK chapters, other FS4JK entities, and other public forums where a farm safety message is requested. Responsibilities of the FS4JK National Youth Safety Spokesperson include:
National Youth Safety Spokesman: Trevor Hoff
Trevor will be a senior at Francis Scott Key High School in Union Bridge, Maryland this fall. Trevor is a farm-incident survivor and he hopes his story will raise awareness about rural safety hazards.
On July 21, 2005, then fourteen year-old Trevor was climbing off a tractor at a grain elevator when it began to move forward. He was pulled into the path of the oncoming tire and the upper-half of his body was crushed under the weight of the tractor. The incident occurred on a concrete surface breaking Trevor’s pelvic bone in half and shattering the bones from his jaw to his forehead. Trevor was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he began a four month journey to recovery.
Doctors told Trevor he may never walk again but he beat the odds and a mild limp is the only evidence of the screws and plates in his pelvic bone. His external scars have healed but intense pains give him advanced warning of impending rain. He is unable to run, jump, or play sports like most high school students but he excels in the classroom and is always willing to lend a hand to those in need.
Trevor believes one of the reasons he survived is to help prevent others from experiencing a similar tragedy. He is eager to teach children and adults about the importance of safe farming practices. Hoff knows that teaching others how to properly work with equipment can help reduce injuries and fatalities and enable people to respond appropriately to hazardous situations.
