The power take off - or PTO - transfers power from the tractor to another implement such as a grain auger, manure spreader, mower or feed grinder
PTO's operate by turning at speeds of 9-16 rotations per second. This speed and the device make the PTO very dangerous.
A PTO entanglement is scary because you are caught before you can react. An entanglement can occure in the knuckle area, or where the two driveline shafts slide together.
Being in grain can lead to the ultimate fate of suffocation. Many people do not realize how quickly you can become entrapped ... and die.
Dr. Danger's PTO Safety Rules
- Wear close-fitting clothing. Avoid wearing sweatshirts with draw-strings and baggy or torn clothes. Tie back long hair.
- Be sure PTO shields are in place and in working condition.
- Start and stop the PTO only when you're sitting in the tractor seat.
- Never step over a PTO.
- Never allow young children to play near the PTO unit or work area.
Note to Parents:
As you know, young children can be extremely curious and have little fear in situations where caution should be used. The spinning of an unshielded PTO may attract young children's attention. It is important that they be kept at a safe distance.
Older youths are often asked to help out around the farm. Parents play an important role on the farm as supervisors of novice machine operators. As youths become independent and accept new duties, it is the responsibility of parents to provide proper training and positive reinforcement. And remember, youths often follow the work habits of adults, whether they be positive or negative.
- Protect your children.
- Keep all children away from the PTO.
- Replace missing or damaged PTO master shields and driveline guarding.
- Instruct young PTO operators in proper use.
- Role model safe behavior when operating the PTO.
