Farm Safety "Rules"

  • "Don't play on or around grain"Don't play on or around grain, Seek help if someone is caught in grain
  • Don't drink and eat anything if you don't know what it is, Follow warnings on chemical containers
  • No seat, No rider, Don't ask to ride, Don't encourage others to ride
  • Wear sunscreen and hats when in the sun, Wear dust masks when around dust
  • Stay outside the animal fence, Be alert to animal behavior
  • Mow up and down slopes with riding mowers and across when using a push mower, Never leave a running mower unattended, No extra riders on lawn mowers
  • Walk around moving machine parts, Don't remove shields
  • "Be alert to slow moving vehicles and other dangers"Wear a seat belt when in vehicles, Don't ride in the back of pickups, Obey traffic laws when driving, Be alert to slow moving vehicles and other dangers
  • Wear protective equipment when on recreational vehicles, Ride vehicles that are appropriate for your size and ability and most importantly, drive them sensibly



Note to Parents: Children and youth on the farm can be at risk if not taught the dangers and ways to avoid the hazards that exist. As an adult, you play a significant role in preventing children and youth from getting hurt. Discuss the dangers present on the farm. Before assigning any farm task to a child, consider his/her physical and mental ability to handle the responsibility safely. Train youth to safely perform a task. Supervise youth closely, especially when they are first learning to do a task. Be a good role model by doing things safely yourself. Keep machinery, fences, vehicles, shields, and storage units in good repair. Provide youth with needed protective equipment for each task.

These guidelines will help provide a safe environment for children and youth.

  • Shield all moving machinery parts
  • Be a role model by not encouraging extra riders on tractors
  • Post decals on grain transport and storage units
  • Supervise youth when working with livestock
  • Lock up all farm chemicals
  • Provide protective equipment for youth that use recreational vehicles
  • Train youth to drive vehicles safely
  • Provide youth with sunscreen, hats, and respirators
