Farm Safety 4 Just Kids

Farm Safety Day Camps

Farm Safety Day Camps can teach children about farm hazards and ways to prevent injury. Farm safety day camps have become popular events in many locations to teach the concepts of farm safety and health in a fun format. Children enjoy the atmosphere of a camp setting. Each year, thousands of children look forward to experiencing their first camp. Since the popularity of day camps has increased over the years, it has become time to look more critically at the influence these camps have on the attitudes and behaviors of the children who participate.

In 2001, the University of Kentucky, under the leadership of Dr. Deborah Reed, secured funding from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to give more insight into what impact day camps have on children and their parents.

The findings of the project indicated that farm safety day camps are effective in improving both farm and non-farm children’s knowledge about farm safety. The scores between the pre and post tests support the hypothesis that children who participate in farm safety day camps demonstrate increases in farm safety knowledge, safety attitudes, and intent to practice safe farm behaviors.

Let’s Do A Farm Safety Day Camp is a manual to help you plan a day camp. The material is based on findings from the research project. To order your copy call (800) 423-5437 or visit the online catalog.
